Best Hardwood Flooring Styles

Hardwood flooring options can vary.

With varying plank widths, you can achieve a farmhouse style. If you choose the same widths with minor variations, a more modern style will be the result.

If you long for a wide range of options, the world of hardwood flooring doesn’t disappoint. Hardwood flooring can suit trendy décor schemes, as well as traditional, tried-and-true designs. We have just what you’re looking for, from sleek and straightforward planks to widened boards with wire brushing.

Best Types of Wood Flooring

Hardwood flooring comes from domestic and exotic trees, including:

  • Oak
  • Maple
  • Hickory
  • Cherry
  • Birch

Whatever species of tree the hardwood comes from determines its grain, character, tone, and hardness levels. All these characteristics are crucial when it comes to selecting the hardwood flooring that fits your home.

What is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?

While solid hardwood has been around for centuries, engineered wood planks are a newer innovation.

Both flooring types appear identical at the surface level, with the same natural looks, earthy tones, and gorgeous grain patterns. From below, they're constructed completely differently.

  • Solid hardwood flooring is an original construction method that stems from years ago. Milled from trees into one solid piece, solid hardwood flooring is beautiful and valuable. You can refinish your solid hardwood multiple times. The main drawback to choosing traditional solid wood is that it can be prone to warping since it expands and shrinks with moisture exposure. For this reason, solid wood isn't ideal in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. It also may not be ideal if you live in a humid climate. Fortunately, engineered hardwood provides a solution to this.
  • Engineered hardwood flooring is built differently, using layers of wood veneers laid in a cross-grain pattern. Engineered hardwood is an excellent choice for busy homes. The primary drawback to choosing engineered hardwood is that you may not be able to refinish it as often as solid. This depends on how thick the real hardwood layer at the top is. Higher-quality engineered products have thicker veneers, and you can refinish them as often as their solid counterpart– giving the best of both worlds.

Where Can I Install Hardwood Floors?

Depending on the type, most hardwood flooring can go in:

  • Vacation Homes
  • Dens
  • Rental Properties
  • Libraries
  • Living Rooms
  • Offices
  • Stairs
  • Bedrooms

Solid hardwood performs best in dry, cool places, while engineered hardwood performs well regardless of the climate. However, neither solid nor engineered hardwood should be used in kitchens or bathrooms.
